Security

What to do if your Steam account may be compromised

Organize the first checks when an unfamiliar login, profile change or trade raises concern.

THE KEY POINT

Secure account access before attempting to sort out an unexpected trade.

01

Start with Steam’s security guidance

Valve recommends reviewing Authorized Devices, signing out everywhere if anything looks wrong, changing the Steam password, checking the linked email account and scanning for malicious software or extensions. Carry out those checks through the genuine Steam and email-provider interfaces.

If you cannot sign in, use Steam Support’s account-recovery page. Someone in a chat offering to recover the account for a fee is not a substitute for that process.

02

Keep a simple incident timeline

  • The first unexpected event and when it occurred.
  • Any unfamiliar device, profile change or trade reference.
  • The website or message you interacted with just before the issue.
  • Which security checks you have already completed.

03

Keep recovery and item questions separate

Account access and an item dispute can require different support steps. Explain each issue clearly and keep its reference. Ask Steam about account access; ask the relevant service about its own order or balance.

If a recent CS2 trade is involved, read Steam’s Trade Protection documentation before taking action. Do not assume that every item or completed transaction has the same recovery options.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
