THE KEY POINT
Match quality and special properties, not only the base item name.
01
Read the quality as part of the item
TF2 uses item qualities to distinguish versions of items. The official community wiki explains these labels and their inventory colours. A shared base name does not make two listings interchangeable.
Start with the full name, quality and item type. Then look for additional properties shown in its details. This is more reliable than identifying an item from its thumbnail.
02
Understand what Strange tracks
Strange items track specified events and gain ranks from their counters. The event depends on the item: a weapon and a cosmetic do not necessarily track the same activity. Read the item’s details and the relevant wiki entry.
A Strange label is not a CS2 wear tier. Avoid carrying Factory New or float assumptions into TF2 comparisons; the games describe different properties.
03
Match the Unusual effect
Unusual items have special particle effects. The exact effect matters when comparing items with the same base name. Check the effect listed in the item details and preview its appearance where available.
Some items combine properties, so quality alone is not the end of the check. Read the complete description for counters, effects and other modifiers rather than expecting one label to explain everything.
| Same hat, different quality | Compare separate versions |
|---|---|
| Same Unusual hat, different effect | Check each named effect |
| Strange item | Read which event its counter records |
04
Review the complete trade offer
Check paint, named effects, killstreak properties and any trading restrictions that are relevant to the item. A seller’s message is not the final offer: open the Steam item details before accepting.
Do not use a listing’s asking price as proof that an identical item recently sold for that amount. Compare matching properties, and keep the final trade reference if you need to contact support.
